Going off-grid

Intention to go off-grid has remained steady in the last year (28% intending to go off-grid at some point in the future), with younger people (aged 18 to 34) still being most interested in going off-grid in the future.

Those intending to go off-grid in the next three years say their main reasons are because they are concerned about future electricity price rises (39%) and because they want to be self-sufficient (37%). This year, those intending to go off-grid are less likely to see going off-grid as a cost-effective option (35% down from 45% last year).

Most of those intending to go off-grid in the next three years have taken action towards completely disconnecting from the grid (87% taken at least one action), including reducing electricity consumption (34%), conducting research about off-grid living (26%) and installing a large solar PV system (24%).
