Queensland Household Energy Survey 2025

Going off grid Going off-grid

Intention to go off-grid has declined in the last year (22% intend to go off-grid at some point in the future, down from 28% in 2024). Younger people (aged 18 to 34) are still the most interested in going off-grid in the future.

Those intending to go off-grid in the next three years say their main reasons are that it is a cost-effective option (44%), concern for future electricity price rises (40%), and because they want to be self-sufficient (40%).

Most of those intending to go off-grid in the next three years have taken action towards completely disconnecting from the grid (86% taken at least one action), including reducing electricity consumption (41%), conducting research about off-grid living (27%) and installing battery storage and solar OV systems (23% and 22%).

You can use the dropdowns to explore the results of each section in more detail. For most questions you can view the data by location, age group, solar PV ownership and other household characteristics. You can also select the “Trend” button to see how the overall results have changed over time.
