Queensland Household Energy Survey 2024

Battery storage Battery storage

While awareness of battery storage is consistent with last year (81%), battery storage ownership among solar PV owners has increased to 23% (up from 16% last year). The main motivators to purchase battery storage are to reduce electricity use from the grid (47%), to reduce electricity bills (42%) and for blackout protection (38%).

On the other hand, intention to purchase battery storage at some point in the future has decreased to 45% (down from 53%), although this is mainly due to an increase in those who already own battery storage (29%, up from 20%). Willingness to spend on battery storage has remained consistent, with 63% of households being willing to spend at least $10K on purchasing a battery storage system (60% last year). Only 26% of PV owners don’t intend to purchase battery storage in future.

Awareness of community batteries continues to trend upwards 39% (37% in 2023, 34% in 2022). Despite this increase in awareness, interest in being involved in community batteries remains unchanged at 38% (39% last year). Those aged 18 to 34 and 35 to 54 show the most interest in community batteries (44% and 43% high interest respectively).

You can use the dropdowns to explore the results of each section in more detail. For most questions you can view the data by location, age group, solar PV ownership and other household characteristics. You can also select the “Trend” button to see how the overall results have changed over time.
