Households can choose from a growing mix of smart home energy products. There are also electricity providers who offer to manage your appliances, solar PV, battery storage, and other devices. A Home Energy Management System (HEMS) automatically coordinates energy in your home. They continue to evolve with advances in product design and technological innovation.
Likelihood of purchasing a HEMS in the next three years has increased slightly from last year but is similar to intent from 2024 (37% very or somewhat likely, vs 33% in 2025). The proportion of households who say they need more information before deciding has been gradually decreasing since 2023 but remains high at 25%. Interest in HEMS is higher among younger people (aged 18 to 34) (48%) and those with high household incomes ($151k or more) (48%).
Interest in various HEMS services has decreased over the last year. Interest in receiving recommendations on how to save on electricity bills is also slightly down (54% high interest rated 7-10, vs 56% in 2025). Interest in allowing for remote control of appliances for electricity is now at 50% (vs 52% in 2025), and for other purposes (46%, vs 49% in 2025).
Interest in third-party remote management has returned to 2024 levels, after a sharp decrease in 2025 (now 35%, vs 28% in 2025). Among those with solar PV, the majority are interested in using a HEMS to get the best results from their solar PV system (75%).
This year, smart meter installation has increased to 57% (vs 51% in 2025), aligning with the Queensland Government accelerating the smart meter rollout across the state by 2030. Most households see the value that smart meter services have to offer, particularly when it comes to providing accurate and reliable metering data (72% high value rated 7-10), removing the need for a meter reader to enter their property (61%) and giving access to products that help them control and understand energy usage and consumption (56%). Those living in South-East Queensland, those aged 18-34 and 35-54, earning higher incomes ($151K or more) and with solar PV, see more value in smart meter services.
