Queensland Household Energy Survey 2026

Battery storage Battery storage

Battery storage ownership among solar PV owners has experienced a significant increase in the last year (35%, vs 21% in 2025). This increase aligns with interest in the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The main motivators to purchase battery storage are to reduce electricity bills (52%), to reduce electricity use from the grid (52%), and for blackout protection (43%).

Intention to purchase battery storage at some point in the future has softened slightly, aligning with the increase in current ownership. Most households expect to spend over $10K on a battery storage system.

Awareness of community batteries remains consistent (38%, vs 37% in 2025), along with interest in community batteries (38%, vs 37% in 2025). Those aged 35–54 show the most interest in community batteries (46% high interest).
