Queensland Household Energy Survey 2023

Battery storage Battery storage

Awareness of battery storage is consistent with last year, and battery storage ownership among solar PV owners is also consistent with 2022 results. The main motivators to purchase battery storage are to reduce electricity use from the grid, to reduce electricity bills and to increase self-sufficiency.

Around half (53%) of solar PV owners intend to purchase battery storage at some point in the future, with another 20% already owning battery storage.  In line with this, 60% of those intending to purchase battery storage would be willing to spend at least $10K on purchasing a battery storage system. Only 27% of PV owners don’t intend to purchase battery storage in future.

Declared awareness of community batteries has increased slightly (37%, up from 34% last year). Despite this increase in awareness, interest in being involved in community batteries has remained relatively unchanged (39%, down from 41% last year). Younger people (aged 18 to 34) show the most interest in community batteries.

You can use the dropdowns to explore the results of each section in more detail. For most questions you can view the data by location, age group, solar PV ownership and other household characteristics. You can also select the “Trend” button to see how the overall results have changed over time.
