Queensland Household Energy Survey 2023

Energy management Energy management services

Households can choose from a growing mix of smart home energy products. There are also electricity providers who will offer to manage your appliances, solar PV, batteries and other devices. Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS – a system that automatically co-ordinates energy in your home) continue to evolve with advances in product design and technological innovation.

One-third of respondents are very or somewhat likely to purchase a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) in the next three years, with another 29% saying they need more information before making a decision. Interest in HEMS is higher among younger people (aged 18 to 34) and those with solar PV.

There is some interest in using HEMS to receive recommendations on things to do in the home to save on electricity bills (53% high interest rated 7-10), allowing for remote control of appliances (electricity: 47%, other purposes: 45%) and automatic management (44%). However, there is much lower interest in third party remote management (28%). Among those with solar PV, the majority are interested in using a HEMS to get the best results from their solar PV system. Younger people (aged 18 to 34), those earning higher incomes ($151K or more) and those with solar PV typically show higher interest in these HEMS services.

You can use the dropdowns to explore the results of each section in more detail. For most questions you can view the data by location, age group, solar PV ownership and other household characteristics. You can also select the “Trend” button to see how the overall results have changed over time.
